What unites us as a team is the conviction that good things can be simple – clear in attitude, carefully made, honest in origin.

We value straightforward products made fairly and work with people who share this attitude – from the renovation of the space to the selection of equipment and the menu.

Leonie Herweg, Nicolas Mertens & Simon Freund live in Berlin's Hansaviertel district, just a stone's throw from the café on Klopstockstrasse. What unites them is their shared sense of quality, aesthetics and good taste – in the simplest and most comprehensive sense.

Simon Freund is a managing director, artist, and entrepreneur. He grew up in his mother's organic food store, where his awareness of sustainability and origins was honed. Later, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He is currently taking a break from his artistic work to focus on setting up the café.

Simon's longtime school friend Nicolas Mertens is a trained restaurateur with a strong sense of hospitality. After an apprenticeship with Lufthansa, he gained early experience in top-tier gastronomy, including at the Hotel Kempinski in Kronberg. He left Frankfurt and moved to Berlin to pursue his passion for good food, high-quality ingredients, and warm hospitality at Café Tiergarten.

Leonie Herweg is Simon's life and business partner and is responsible for art direction, events, and public relations at the café. Raised in Switzerland, she studied International Relations in Geneva and Curatorial Studies in London. She has many years of experience in the international art and culture scene, including work for MANIFESTA16, the Goethe-Institut Cairo, the MMK Museum of Modern Art Frankfurt, the mumok Vienna, and Grisebach in Berlin.

As a freelance curator, she runs the GROTTO project space in the Hansaviertel district – a venue for contemporary art and culture. In the café, she is responsible for continuously expanding our small but exquisite art collection and designs events ranging from private parties to brand events, always with a clear focus on the essentials and a great love for detail.

Together, the trio shares an interest in architecture, contemporary design and high-quality food – with a clear stance.

From the initial idea to the present day, we have been accompanied by many people who contribute their skills and their time.

Sophie Kretzschmar, a graduate of the Slow Food University in Piedmont, supports us in culinary development – with a focus on regionality, seasonality and simplicity.

Johanna Karges, architect and designer, helped design the spatial layout of the café and is also a reliable support during its day-to-day operation.

Linus Köster from törnqvist curates two new filter coffee varieties for us every month – with care, experience and intuition.

In addition, we regularly have international interns who enrich us with fresh perspectives and a great deal of commitment.

Special thanks go to Berni for the website design, the drawings – and the technical know-how behind it.

Work at Café Tiergarten, become part of our team

-

We are always happy to welcome people who are interested in becoming part of our team.

Whether in service, in the kitchen, at events or behind the scenes – we are looking for people with attitude, attentiveness and interest in good food, clear design and fair cooperation.

You should enjoy working in a team, be reliable, and appreciate interacting with guests. Experience in the hospitality or cultural sector is a plus, but not required.

We offer a respectful workplace in the heart of the Hansaviertel district, fair conditions and an environment where quality, simplicity and a loving attention to detail count.
